Curriculum Overview

Reading and Writing Classes for Kindergarteners – 4th Graders

We have partnered with the renowned publishing company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to bring you the “Journeys” reading curriculum. We will also introduce our students to Raz-Kids, a digital reading curriculum used by many top school districts in the U.S. These digital books are audio-synchronized with highlighted text so that students can practice reading along with a native English speaker. Teachers and students may also agree to read books requested by the students. With our reading and writing curriculum, students will learn to read comfortably, learn new vocabulary, work on reading comprehension and critical reading skills, and practice speaking and writing. Our teachers will guide students through this curriculum and help to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in English. Note: Up to 2 students may take these classes together and split the cost (depending on broadband capability.)

Reading and Writing Classes for 5th – 12th Graders

We will introduce our students to classic literature as well as modern award-winning books in English. In these classes, students will learn to read critically and to discuss literature both analytically and philosophically. Lessons on vocabulary and grammar are integrated into book discussions. Each student will keep a written journal analyzing the books discussed in the class. Students will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing. Note: Up to 2 students may take these classes together and split the cost (depending on broadband capability.)

Intensive Writing Classes for 3rd– 12th Graders

This class focuses on all aspects of writing in English, including researching, brainstorming, organizing, drafting, developing, editing and proofreading. Students will work on various genres of writing including expository, persuasive, creative, and personal essays. Our writing classes are tailored to give each student individual attention focusing on the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Note: It is recommended that students take these writing classes individually.

Vocabulary Building Classes for 2nd – 12th Graders

A strong working vocabulary is a powerful asset in all academic disciplines and in most every area of life. Improved reading, writing, and critical thinking, along with increased self-confidence and better test performance, all can be traced to dedicated study of words – the building blocks of language. Studies show that drilled memorization is not the best way to learn vocabulary. This class uses a variety of interactive activities to make learning enjoyable, satisfying, and lasting, and instruction is individualized to a student’s reading level. Our intensive and proven word-in-context approach offers abundant practice by which students encounter lesson words in many different ways, eventually making them their own. Furthermore, our study of word parts equips students to decipher the meanings of unfamiliar words in schoolwork, independent reading, and standardized tests. Vocabulary building is a life-long adventure, and students are invited to build on their success through the advanced sections of the class. A pretest will be given to determine the student’s placement and a post-test will be given to show student’s progress.
